South African Police Service Communication Services Office of the Station Commander PO Box 2549 Honeydew 2040
Tel (011) 801-8580 Fax (011) 801-8581 E-mail: (External) gp.honeydew-comm@saps.org.za (MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE STATION COMMANDER) Press Release - SAPS National Police Day Operations 22nd January 2010 till 31st January 2010 Ever since the Cabinet approved National Police Day on 27 January 2005, the SAPS, together with diverse communities and other stakeholders, has celebrated this day. The National Police Day of the South African Police Service on the 27th of January commemorates the sacrifices that our men and women in blue have made and continue to make as they provide safety for all who live in South Africa. During this period the SAPS also reflect on their achievements and what still needs to be done to create safer environments for all people in South Africa. Honeydew SAPS conducted special Crime Prevention Operations during the past week addressing mostly TRIO crimes in the Precinct. Other units and departments who assisted during the week’s major crime prevention clean-up included: 84 reservists from the Provincial Task Team, 8 members and horses from the East Rand Mounted Unit, Honeydew Crime Prevention Unit, members of Gauteng Security, 10 members from JMPD, 2 from Home Affairs, 4 members of the Public Order Policing Services – Reaction Group. Crimes in High Schools were also addressed on Wednesday when 115 police officers raided certain schools in the Precinct where a strong message was relayed that there will be No- tolerance towards crime in schools. Friday morning (04:00) a greenbelt operation was conducted (between the Reservist Group, Honeydew Crime Prevention, Gauteng Security and Home Affairs) focusing on problematic greenbelts, addressing “bush sleepers”, illegal immigrants and empty houses. A total of 46 people were arrested. A second operation started at 10:00 between Metro and Honeydew SAPS addressing the beggars and hawkers at the street corners and at the robot intersections. A total of 23 people were arrested and fines issued to the value of: R13 000 for different by-law infringements. An appeal is made to everyone to please refrain from giving the beggars food and money as they are removed on a daily basis only to return later as they know that the people will give them food and money. There are legal organizations that can rather be supported. It is very dangerous especially for the children that are begging with their mothers.
